Character Showcase #2
over 2 years ago – Wed, Dec 15, 2021 at 02:57:25 AM

Hey Chefs! We hope you had a great weekend. We have just unlocked our third stretch goal: Expanded Cave Network! Our next stretch goal is an expansion of music-related features in Chef RPG, including working jukeboxes, custom music tracks for main NPCs, and the ability to hire live music for your restaurants!

Continuing from our previous update, here is our second character showcase of the fascinating NPCs you will meet throughout your journey!

On the surface, Bowie seems like a relaxed old man who wants to do as little as possible each day. However, once you get to know him, he will begin telling you about his incredible experiences working as an engineer in a locomotive factory, to spending several years at sea as a fisherman, to finally learning to pilot a plane and spending two decades exploring the different corners of the world. Now that he is too old to go adventuring, he spends his days managing a fish shop, donating all his profits to charities. He loves his job since it lets him chat with locals and tourists every day.

An outgoing woman who lives life to the fullest, Bea met her husband Aimé at a music festival, and they bonded over their love for bodybuilding and partying. They now share responsibility of raising their 6 kids in White Ash Harbor. When not managing the little ones, Bea manages the local bar in White Ash Harbor’s town square, creating delicious cocktails that the tourists can’t get enough of. When she has some free time, she loves to hang out at the beach.

A competitive body builder who loves to show off his gains. Just like his wife Bea, he loves to live life to the fullest and won’t ever decline an invitation to a party. Between working out and helping Bea with the bar, he loves spending time with his kids and taking them to the playground. He dreams of competing in the Olympics one day and hopes his kids will grow up and becomes athletes as well.

A spontaneous girl living in Billboard City, Fleur has a complicated relationship with her demanding family. Her family holds a generations-old café that is a staple in Billboard City’s top 100 culinary establishments and has held its place in the list for over 30 years. The task of upholding this feat was initially passed on to her brother. But due to her brother’s lack of interest in inheriting such a difficult trial, the demanding role was eventually passed on to Fleur. Fleur is a hard worker and talented cook, but can she rise to the occasion and overcome her inexperience?

We hope you enjoyed that read! More updates coming soon!

Our Story So Far & Cost Breakdown
over 2 years ago – Wed, Dec 15, 2021 at 02:55:35 AM

Almost There!

It’s been less than 36 hours and Chef RPG is already 90% funded! We are truly grateful for your support!

Our Story So Far

Noah has been building Chef RPG for the past 16 months. After the project began gaining some momentum online, he left his job as an architectural designer to work on the project full-time, using his savings to keep the project going. Nikita joined Chef RPG this May, and has been a tremendous help with her creative character designs and dialogues. She also draws the beautiful food art for the dishes you will be serving in your restaurants. Tim is the newest member of our team, and we are excited to listen to the amazing music compositions he comes up with!

Throughout the development process, we’ve received a ton of great feedback from Youtube viewers and realized there are many aspects of the game that can still be improved. Kickstarter will help us work on the project full time and create quality gameplay, art, and music. We would also like to bring on an experienced animator to help improve our character and animal sprites, as that is the area where we have less experience with.

Here is a breakdown of how your contribution will be spent:

Stretch Goals Coming Soon

As we are approaching 100% funded, we will be announcing some cool stretch goals! New game features, unique areas, and overall game improvements will be possible as we hit higher goals. Share with your friends and help expand Chef RPG’s gameplay!

In the meantime, if you want to check out the development progress, Noah posts devlogs, architectural design tutorials, and pixel art time-lapses on his YouTube Channel!

Character Showcase #1
over 2 years ago – Wed, Dec 15, 2021 at 02:55:22 AM

Happy Wednesday fellow Chefs! We are excited to announce that the Farming stretch goal has been unlocked! With this addition, a new farming skill will be added to the game, and you will be able to grow fruits and vegetables in a greenhouse to use in your dishes. Furthermore, special farming patches in the wilderness will be available to be discovered. Under the special climate conditions of these wild areas, rare ingredients can be grown and harvested.

The next stretch goal will be a major expansion of White Ash Harbor’s underground caves. These caves have been carved out through thousands of years of water flows. Many ingredients, creatures, and lost treasures can be discovered in its depths.

Character Showcase

For this update, we want to showcase some of Chef RPG's residents and signify the impact they will play in your journey.

An older generation android, Hasel was abandoned in a dumpster within Billboard City, before eventually being recovered by Aloys. A small frog was found with her, and has never left her side since. Hasel was brought back to life, however the water damage to her drives were irreparable, and now she experiences frequent bugs. Despite her impairments, Hasel tackles every task with optimism and focus, and now runs Bubble Shack in White Ash Harbor.

As one of the oldest residents of White Ash Harbor, Pomarine’s looks can be deceiving. She is a fierce hunter who loves to experience life in the wilderness, and a mentor for all aspiring rangers. Before she moved to White Ash harbor, Pomarine was the mother of 12 children, all of which are adults now. At the time, she lived in the city, and she took care of the children by herself while her husband was working. When he left her for an easier life with another woman, she had to make a radical choice and moved to the countryside. She learned how to hunt and to gather food to feed her children, becoming a skilled ranger in the process. She loves mud baths and activities that allows her to be one with nature.

A well-known food critic in the culinary world, Lucius puts on a kind façade but hides a rotten personality underneath. In his school days, he would manipulate and throw other students under the bus, just to gain favor with his teachers. Despite his unappetizing character, he knows his stuff when it comes to food. Gaining his approval is a key step in being recognized as a quality restaurant in the country.

A gifted programmer and mechanic, Bianca is a cool girl with questionable morality. As a child, she was fascinated with machinery and considered a genius among her peers. Despite her talents, she was never a good student and was constantly rebellious against her teachers. Her lack of interest in school is a stark contrast against her passion for business and entrepreneurship. She is working on a computer program that she dreams would one day make her rich. However, until that day arrives, she runs the Bits & Pieces repair shop in White Ash Harbor.

Artistic Influences in Chef RPG
over 2 years ago – Fri, Dec 10, 2021 at 12:48:29 AM

Hey future chefs! Hope you are having a great weekend! As we are pushing towards our first stretch goal, we wanted to take the time to share our artistic influences and the art direction moving forward. Our team is very passionate about art hopes to push the envelope for the unique world that we create.

Archigram

Archigram is an architectural group in the 1960s that created an artistic movement featuring neo-futurism and pro-consumerism. The group created a series of hypothetical projects depicting scenes of megastructures, walking cities, pod-living, and advertisements. The drawing below shows a city ruled by machines, and humans are the raw materials being processed. However, despite their loss of power, the people are meant to enjoy the experience through consumption, and having all of their needs fulfilled. White Ash Harbour is a small seaside town, and only features a small glimpse of the modern world. Eventually, when we move onto designing Billboard City (the other major area in Chef RPG), Archigram will be a fantastic artistic reference.

Advertisements & Billboards

We love animated / neon signs and we want to utilized that to the fullest in our game world. Typically, they are just your average advertisement. But when designed well, they can become an attraction and enhance the architecture on which they are attached.

Vending Machines

There's no denying it. Vending machines are COOL. In Japan, they have become a visual addition to the scenery and are a cultural phenomenon. Not only will there be vending machines in the game, but some of the architecture in Chef RPG will be inspired by the vending machine aesthetic.

Fenghuang Old Town

Under a university research grant, Noah has conducted architectural research in Fenghuang, China. Fenghuang is one of the ancient towns of China, containing some original buildings built over 300 years ago. The purpose of his research was to study dynamic passageways, and the elements that make a passageway more lively and pedestrian friendly. Noah has applied this research to the town designs, and Fenghuang Old Town greatly inspired the design of White Ash Harbor's dock area.

Spirited Away

Ghibli's worlds feature a unique combination of traditional Asian and European architecture, mixed with steampunk elements. The result is an extremely cozy and dreamlike world that everyone would love to visit. Chef RPG is inherently meant to be a cozy game, and a purely futuristic aesthetic will take away from that warmness. Therefore, we are combining traditional buildings with futurism elements for greater variety, a sense of coziness, and the passing of time.

Thanks for reading! We hope you enjoyed this update and would love to hear any feedback and ideas for the game moving forward.
